Welcome to the South West Corner...
Few places in Australia can boast such a diversity of intriguing
attractions and wondrous wilderness like Western Australia's South
West Corner. The spectacular coastline is frequented not only by
national parks, dolphins and whales, but pretty seaside resort towns
lying on striking bays and world famous surfing beaches. The surf mecca
of Margaret River is home to many of the exciting breaks, as well as a
renowned wine region which has been tantalising vino lovers for decades.
Inland, the coastal plains give way to the rolling green hills of the
hinterland, a picturesque area containing the state's most fertile and
productive agricultural region. The thriving rural villages supporting
the extensive farmlands have gone craft crazy, and make the ideal
country getaway. Travelling south-east, the undulating pastoral lands
become the extensive eucalypt tracts of the grand Southern Forrests.
Magnificent towering karri, jarrah, and marri trees (up to 90 metres
high and 7 metres wide) dominate the landscape, treating visitors to
some of the greatest forest drives and bush walks anywhere on Earth.
If you can swing it, Springtime is great time to visit as much of the
South East Corner becomes bathed in colour. Over 7000 species of
wildflowers and orchids are known to the district, and many of them
are found nowhere else. Exotic blooms like the kangaroo paw, potato
orchid, royal hakea, and the Quaalup bell are just a few of the many
floral delights.
