Welcome to the Mid Coast...
Incorporating the Batavia and Outback Coasts, the coastline along
Western Australia's Mid Coast is steeped in history. The first
recorded landing of a European on Australian soil took place on Dirk
Hartog Island in 1616 by the Dutch explorer of the same name. Later on
in the 17th century, ships of the Dutch East India Company sailed in
these uncharted waters (discovered by Hartog) en-route to
Indonesia, these voyages often ended in tragedy. Wrecks of four such ill-
fated vessels have been located (the Batavia, Zuytdorp, Zeewijk,
and Verguide Draeck), and their survivors were to become Australia's first
European settlers.
Today the coast is much more hospitable, dotted by a series of holiday
and fishing towns on or close to a grand stretch of pristine beaches.
Several towns with reliable off-shore breezes become windsurfing meccas
during the summer, while others tempt tourists with the Mid Coast's
speciality of the state's best rock lobster. The area is also home to two of
W.A.'s most loved and visited attractions; the sociable dolphins
of Monkey Mia, and the extraordinary Pinnacle landscape found within
the Nambung National Park.
