Caloundra, Currimundi
The southern gateway to the Sunshine Coast, beautiful Caloundra is a
popular holiday destination nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the green
coastal hinterland. Travelling at a less hectic pace than it's northern
neighbours, the town is encircled by no less than six main beaches,
several of which are renowned for their excellent surfing breaks. The others are
protected by Bribie Island's long northern sandbar, creating an enticing body
of sheltered waters known as the Pumicestone Channel. Definitely Caloundra's
main attraction, this stunning passage of waterways is a watersports paradise,
ideal for windsurfing, boating, sailing, fishing, and safe swimming.
Caloundra is also within close proximity to the natural marvels of the Glass
House Mountains and Blackall Ranges, (see Hinterland) making the perfect base
for pending explorations. An array of mostly waterfront accommodation compliments
the area's appealing beaches and waterways, and is designed to suit any travel
budget. There's good range of land-based attractions and activities around town
as well.
Three beaches north of Caloundra, the smaller seaside resort of Currimundi
provides an alternative place to stay and play.
