Welcome to Cape York Peninsula...

Cape York is the northern most tip of Queensland, and is one of the most isolated regions in Australia. The majority of the area is essentially rugged landscape, and this wide wilderness area is inhabited by just over 10,000 people. To view this intense landscape, you will have to be prepared to embark on one of Australia's great road adventures. Keeping in mind that the peninsula is the size of Victoria, with few sealed roads, you may wish to employ one of the several tour organisations to show you this unique part of Queensland.

isolated beach Two distinct seasons exist at the Cape, the wet and the dry. During the wet season all roads are cut of and virtually all road transport stops. Therefore, the best time to travel within the area is between June and November.

The many Aboriginal communities in the area are self-sufficient and may be visited so long as you obtain permission in writing beforehand. You can also experience Quinkan Aboringinal rock art at Split Rock, situated in the stunning sandstone country, at the base of the Cape.

There are camping sites and caravan sites available, and if you are going to go exploring, then don't forget a hat, plenty of water and some serious hiking shoes, as the terrain can be as rough as it gets.
