Coffs Harbour, Urunga, Bellingen, Nambucca Heads
The largest centre on the mid north coast, Coffs Harbour is a
subtropical playground. Australians and international travellers
alike flock to the area every year to enjoy the great climate,
water sports, and in particular the gorgeous piece of coastline
on which the town resides.
The range of activities Coffs has to offer is vast. If water sports
flip your pancakes, white water rafting, deep sea fishing, and scuba diving
are among the most popular. If staying dry is your prerogative, there are
a number of different tours at hand including four wheel drive trips
through the nearby rainforest and whale watching expeditions.
In town, the North Coast Botanic Gardens is short distance from the
city centre. Get there by following the interesting Coffs Creek Walk.
There's also an oceanarium with performing dolphins, a historical
museum and of course the Big Banana.
Accommodation is not a problem and the range available caters for all
budgets. There's everything from world-class resorts to caravan parks
to four excellent backpacker hostels, which perpetuate Coffs nightlife.
Twenty kilometres south, the quiet townships of Urunga and Mylestom
lie on opposite sides of where the Bellinger and Kalang Rivers escape into the
ocean. The rivers join forces just 200m from the coast, creating a
wide and impressive estuary ideal for watersports. The beaches north
and south of the mouth could only add extra appeal.
Inland from Urunga, Bellingen is a small scenic town set in the
lush Bellinger Valley. Once the commercial centre of the region,
this naturally beautiful place is now the centre of the areas
artistic/alternative population.
Picturesque walks, horse riding and canoeing are popular activities as are
the informative tours which operate within the valley. The town
itself is inundated with a proportionately high number of craft shops,
galleries, and organic cafes. This culminates
every third Saturday of the month with the Bellingen Markets, a major
regional event with over 250 stalls, entertainment and music.
Back on the coast and south of Urunga, the small resort town of
Nambucca Heads will provide solace for those seeking a break
from the relentless tourist attractions and activities the district
has on offer. It's fine setting overlooking the mouth of the Nambucca
River inspires a peaceful atmosphere complimented by beautiful beaches
and super friendly locals. Accommodation available is plentiful, but
like most holiday destinations on the mid north coast, it's advised
to book ahead for the summer holidays.
