Getting around Australia by train

This is one of the longest rail journeys in the world, through some of the most inhospitable yet spectacular country on earth.

It is an adventure that spans the massive continent of Australia, coast to coast, ocean to ocean.

The Indian Pacific travels 4,352 kilometers, from Sydney, through the Blue Mountains; across rich farming lands; through historic mining towns such as Broken Hill; through Adelaide; across the Nullarbor Plain on the longest straight stretch of railway track in the world (478 kilometers) to the historic mining town of Kalgoorlie, before arriving in Perth - on the Indian Ocean.

The Ghan will take you 1,555 kilometers through ancient mountain ranges, over the red-crusted earth of the Simpson Desert, past oceans of sand hills into the very heart of Australia-the Red Centre

The Ghan takes you through some of the most desolate countryside in Australia, in the comfort and luxury of a fine hotel.

After a relaxing sleep you will arrive at Alice Springs - Australia's oasis.

The perfect starting point for exploring Australia's Outback attractions;
Uluru (Ayers Rock),
the ancient East and West MacDonnell Ranges,
King's Canyon
the mysterious beauty of Kata Tjuta (the Olgas).

From its early days as a rather irregular service, the legendary Ghan has evolved into one of the world's most comfortable and impressive rail journeys.

The Ghan travels once a week from Melbourne Victoria or Sydney New South Wales and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, stopping off in Adelaide along the way.

More than a hundred years ago, The Overland pioneered inter-capital rail travel in Australia.
A century on, this historic train still provides a comfortable and convenient overnight service from Australia's premier wine producing regions and gateway to the Outback Adelaide(South Australia), to the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne(Victoria).

The 828 kilometer journey takes approximately twelve and a half hours.
